Installing a Magnetic Fly Screen Without Drilling

Magnetic balcony-door screens are designed for adhesive installation. The frame-mounted Velcro strip holds the curtain in place; magnets in the centre seam let you walk through hands-free. Done carefully, the whole job takes 15–30 minutes and leaves no holes — which is why these screens are popular in rented homes.

What you need

  • Measuring tape (see our measuring guide first)
  • Clean cloth and mild cleaner or isopropyl alcohol for degreasing
  • Scissors (only for trimming Velcro length — not the mesh unless the product allows it)
  • Push pins or thumbtacks if included and your frame is wood

Step 1: Clean and dry the frame

Adhesive Velcro bonds to dust and grease poorly. Wipe the top and side inner surfaces of the door frame where the tape will sit. Let the surface dry completely — moisture trapped under the strip causes peeling within weeks.

Step 2: Fit the top strip first

Most kits include a wider Velcro band for the top edge (often 3.8 cm). Start at one top corner, press firmly along the full width, and avoid stretching the tape as you go. The top mount carries most of the curtain's weight; a weak top bond is the main reason screens sag mid-season.

Step 3: Attach the sides

Hang the curtain from the top Velcro, then align the side edges. Some models include narrower side strips; others rely on gravity and magnet weight alone once the top is secure. Follow the manufacturer's diagram — forcing a different order can twist the mesh.

Step 4: Optional push pins on wood

For untreated wooden door frames, push pins through the Velcro into the frame add mechanical backup without drilling. Use them sparingly at the top centre and upper corners where stress concentrates. They leave tiny holes that are far less visible than screw-mounted frames.

Step 5: Test the magnetic closure

Walk through several times from both directions. Magnets should meet with a light click and no visible gap at the bottom. If the seam gaps in the middle, the curtain may be too tight horizontally — reposition side alignment. If the bottom flares open, the screen may be slightly too tall for the opening.

Removing the screen cleanly

When summer ends or you move out, peel Velcro slowly at a low angle rather than yanking vertically. Warm adhesive with a hair dryer on low can soften old tape on painted frames. Residual adhesive on uPVC or painted wood usually lifts with rubbing alcohol; test on a hidden spot first.

When adhesive install is not ideal

Very textured stone surrounds, dusty renovation sites, or frames with failing paint may not hold adhesive reliably. In those cases a tension-mounted interior frame or professional fixed screen may be safer than repeatedly re-gluing a magnetic curtain.
